In Invisible Cities, the introductory premise is a conversation between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan, who do not speak the same language. So that means he’s the Brian Eno of literature. A narrator at each place interprets the cards for the reader, but since the tarot cards are subject to multiple interpretations, the stories the narrators offer are not necessarily the stories intended by the mute storytellers. The stories unfold one card at a time – the selected cards are also shown in the margins – as the narrator struggles to create coherence between each card and an overall narrative thread throughout the course of the reading.
